On September 29, 2007 at Offenburg City Hall, the official cerimony took place to agree a Sister City relationship of Offenburg and Pietra Ligure. Sharing a long history of international exchanges, cultural and sports activities, both cities have established their partnership, officially signed by their respective Mayors.
Signing of this agreement was no foregone conclusion, in a history of personal friendships, cultural exchanges and sports experiences that find their roots in the 1960s, at a time when cyclist Langhurst trained in Pietra Ligure, and bicycle racer, now the successful president of Offenburg’s Team Wolfgang Wurz came second at an international race in Pietra Ligure, 1972.
On the Italian part, Mr. Ferrua committed himself tirelessly to developing personal ties in the Ortenau area, to which contacts with Offenburg’s orchestra followed, facilitated by Mr. Lehmann and Jess Haberer.
A city of 59,000 people, Offenburg is situated 25 kilometers east of Strasbourg, bordered by the Rhine River Valley, at the edge of the Black Forest, surrounded by vineyards and with the Kinzig Rivers flowing nearby. Offenburg’s 2,500 businesses, many of an international standing, employ 40,000 people. With 466 retailers who record sales of 525 million euros, Offenburg is central to the economy of Baden and has a role as a key supplier in the surrounding area. 19,000 commuters travel to Offenburg daily to reach their workplaces in various industrial, commercial, services, arts and crafts sectors.
Both Offenburg and Pietra Ligure share a common Sister City feeling and hope for future touristic, cultural and social exchanges. These feelings are amplified in the personal sympathy of Mayor of Offenburg Mrs. Edith Schreiner and her commitment to this Sister City relationship.

Thanks to this friendship sports, culture and food events take place annually, such as Ranzi’s beer and wine festival BIRRA E NOSTRALINO, a joint initiative of Circolo Giovane Ranzi and Offenburg’s beer makers, late August.
